Why Muscle Is One of the Most Important Longevity Organs for Women

When most people think about longevity, they think about the heart, brain, or hormones.


But there is another organ that deserves far more attention:


Skeletal muscle.


Muscle does much more than help us lift weights or change the way our body looks. It is a metabolically active tissue involved in glucose regulation, energy metabolism, movement, bone health, physical resilience, and our ability to remain independent as we age.

For women, particularly during midlife and after menopause, preserving muscle mass, strength, and function should be an important part of a healthy-aging strategy.

After we eat carbohydrates, insulin helps move glucose from the bloodstream into tissues, including skeletal muscle, where it can be used for energy or stored as glycogen.

Regular resistance exercise can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism.


This is one reason maintaining active, healthy muscle is particularly important for women concerned about:


• Insulin resistance

• Prediabetes

• Type 2 diabetes

• Increasing abdominal fat

• Changes in body composition during midlife


Instead of focusing exclusively on the number on the scale, we should also be asking:



How much metabolically active tissue are you maintaining?


Muscle and Bone Work Together


Muscle and bone are closely connected.

When muscles contract against resistance, they place mechanical forces on bone. Appropriate resistance and impact exercise can stimulate adaptations in both muscle and bone.

This becomes increasingly important after menopause, when declining estrogen contributes to accelerated bone loss.

Resistance training can improve strength and physical function, and appropriately designed programs may also help preserve or improve bone mineral density.

Stronger muscles can also improve balance and physical capacity, potentially reducing fall risk.

So when we talk about osteoporosis prevention, we shouldn’t think only about calcium, vitamin D, or a DEXA scan.


Muscle matters too.



Muscle Helps Preserve Independence


Longevity isn’t simply about how many years we live.

It’s about how well we can function during those years.



Think about what allows you to:


• Get up from the floor

• Rise from a chair without assistance

• Climb stairs

• Carry groceries

• Lift a suitcase

• Maintain balance

• Recover from illness or surgery

• Continue travelling and participating in activities you enjoy


All of these depend, at least partly, on muscular strength and physical capacity.

This is why strength and function can be just as important as muscle mass itself.

Preserving muscle means helping preserve independence.


How Can Women Build and Maintain Muscle?


The encouraging news is that women can improve strength and muscle function well into later life.


1. Prioritize Resistance Training


Adults should perform muscle-strengthening activity involving the major muscle groups at least two days per week.

For many women, progressively training 2–3 times per week is a practical starting point.

The key word is progressive.

Your muscles need gradually increasing resistance or challenge in order to adapt.


2. Eat Enough Protein


Protein provides the amino acids needed to repair and build muscle tissue.

Protein requirements depend on age, body size, activity level, kidney function, health status, and goals.

For many healthy, physically active midlife and older adults, approximately 1.0–1.2 g of protein/kg/day can be a reasonable target, with higher intakes sometimes used in people who resistance train or are trying to preserve lean mass during weight loss.

Protein should ideally be distributed across the day rather than consuming most of it at one meal.

Individual recommendations should be adjusted for medical conditions and overall nutritional needs.


3. Don’t Rely on Walking Alone


Walking is excellent.

It supports cardiovascular health, glucose regulation, mental health, mobility, and overall physical activity.

But walking does not provide the same muscular stimulus as progressive resistance training.

We need both movement and resistance.


4. Prioritize Recovery


Muscle adaptation happens between training sessions.

Adequate sleep, appropriate nutrition, sufficient recovery, and management of excessive training stress all matter.


5. Look Beyond Exercise


If a woman is struggling to maintain muscle despite appropriate training, we also consider the broader clinical picture.


That may include:


• Nutrition and protein intake

• Thyroid function

• Insulin resistance

• Menopause-related changes

• Sleep

• Stress and recovery

• Vitamin and mineral deficiencies

• Chronic illness

• Medications


Building muscle isn’t simply about telling someone to “exercise more.”

The whole physiology matters.


Muscle and Longevity: Mass Isn’t the Whole Story


When discussing muscle and longevity, an important distinction is often missed:


Muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical function are not the same thing.

Having more muscle can be beneficial, but how well that muscle functions matters enormously.

Measures such as grip strength, walking speed, ability to rise from a chair, balance, and overall physical performance provide valuable information about functional aging.

This is why healthy aging shouldn’t be measured only by body weight or BMI.


We should also be paying attention to:


How strong are you?

How well do you move?

And how much function are you preserving?
